The composition Sweet 16 is based on Slash’s opening guitar riff from Guns N’ Roses’ 1987 classic Sweet Child O’ Mine. The work uses the technique of “phasing” which was made popular by composers such as Steve Reich and Terry Riley in the 1960s, and can most simply be described as a form of looping in which one of the two loops is slightly shorter than the other. The melody by Guns N’ Roses has 64 notes and is repeated 64 times, making the piece last a total of 15 minutes.
Composer, filmmaker and director of Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New York, Phill Niblock is often described as the forgotten minimalist. His music is characterised by the exploration of sound textures generated by microtonal tunings in long durations and often very high volume (!) whereby the static drone-like minimalistic low sounds create complex overtone patterns. Nagro is combining a prerecorded organ track with a live performance.
At the time of his artistic turning point between Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912) and the Bottle Rack (1914), Marcel Duchamp composes Erratum Musical and then a second version La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires même. Erratum Musical (The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors Even. Erratum Musical) in 1913. The complex instructions about how the random series of notes should be generated and carried out (in an unplayable way!) may be an interesting clue to his artistic transition. The instructions end with “Execution [is] really useless by the way.”
Described by the composer as “more a readymade almost”, the autobiographical work Alle Fugler (2018) juxtaposes two universes; the room where Arcangel plays and hums a lullaby with his guitar, trying to make his daughter fall asleep, and, from the outside, the sound of the weekend; drunk people hanging out, howling a different song. A simple lullaby is played on the flute stop of the organ, adding an improvised base line that doesn’t always fit. When you least expect it, the youngsters outside start to sing, and your lullaby has to start all over again….
